Retinol- can I start using it now?

Posted by Julienne Galea on

Yes, it can be a good time to use retinol depending on your skin type, goals, and the season. Here's when retinol use is most beneficial:

# 1.Skin Concerns:
- Anti-Aging: Retinol is effective at reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and improving skin texture.
- Acne: It helps with acne by unclogging pores and promoting cell turnover.
- Hyperpigmentation: Retinol can reduce dark spots and even out skin tone.

 2. Skin Type:
- Oily/Combination Skin: Retinol can be helpful for those with oilier skin types.
- Sensitive/Dry Skin: If you have sensitive or dry skin, consider starting with a lower concentration and applying it less frequently to avoid irritation.

#3. Season
Fall/Winter:These are ideal seasons to start using retinol because there is less sun exposure. Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so always use sunscreen if you are applying it during sunnier months.
Summer: You can still use it, but be diligent about sun protection to avoid irritation or increased sensitivity to UV rays. See below for our recommendations

# 4. Age
- If you're in your late 20s to early 30s, this is typically when dermatologists recommend introducing retinol to prevent early signs of aging.

How to Use It:
- Start with a low concentration (0.25-0.5%) to avoid irritation. ( Medik8 Retinal 1 , Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Retinol Serum and Elizabeth Arden Retinol capsules would be great options )
- Apply it at night and follow up with a good moisturizer. ( Chanel Solution 10 or  Dermalogica
Ultra calming stabilising cream are our recommendations for sensitive skin)

- Use sunscreen during the day, as retinol increases sun sensitivity. ( Lancaster sun perfecting fluid is our top favourite for protection and comfort . Shiseido SPF 50 is the better option if one is active ( and sweaty ) or is planning on swimming. Shiseido has a patent “ wetforce” guarantee that its protection veil is reinforced even when wet!

If you're new to retinol, gradually increase your usage to allow your skin to adjust. Example use twice a week initially then 3 times a week ..increasing slowly to daily. See how your skin reacts. Some people use retinol twice a week for a longer period than others varying on sensitivity.
